< EXPLORE ALL STORIES

Montenegro, meaning “Black Mountain”, is a country of remarkable diversity.

Time in Montenegro is defined by mountain landscapes and 175 miles of Adriatic coastline, fortified coastal towns dating back to the 7th century BC, national parks with ancient forests and glacial lakes, monastery courtyards and local people known for their warmth and hospitality.

Each stay in Montenegro can focus on different interests or combine them, from cultural heritage and gastronomy to nature and outdoor exploration.

Bay of Kotor: Coastal Heritage and Adriatic Sea

The Bay of Kotor is Montenegro’s most recognisable landscape — a fjord-like bay framed by steep mountains, historic towns, coves and the blue Adriatic Sea. The region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the medieval towns of Kotor and Perast, as well as the inner bay.

The area can be explored on foot and by boat, with local storytellers sharing the stories behind its architectural landmarks, culture, heritage and coastal nature. Culinary experiences and wine tastings offer insight into local traditions. The surrounding mountains and the Adriatic Sea offer opportunities for hiking and sea activities, as well as time to relax on the beach.

In Kotor, the old town has endured sieges, wars and earthquakes, yet its stone streets remain. Narrow alleys open onto small squares, where the scent of citrus trees fills the air. Many friendly felines wander the streets, making Kotor well known as the “City of Cats”, with even a small Cats Museum dedicated to them. From the town, the city walls extend up San Giovanni Hill to the medieval fortress, and hiking them offers wide views of the bay and an active way to explore the town.

Across the bay, Perast is defined by white-stone Baroque palaces along the waterfront and a genuine feeling of local life. Once an important maritime centre, it remains closely tied to the sea. The islets of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George have long shaped Perast’s identity, and visiting them reveals much about the town’s connection to the sea. According to tradition, Our Lady of the Rocks was formed over centuries as sailors laid stones into the sea after finding an icon of the Madonna and Child.

Montenegro’s Royal Legacy and Monasteries

Montenegro’s identity is shaped by its royal history and spiritual landmarks, found both inland and along the coast, reflecting the country’s cultural and historical foundations.

Lovćen National Park rises above the Adriatic near Kotor. At the summit stands the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, reached by around 460 stone steps, with viewpoints along the route overlooking the sea and surrounding landscape, making it both a great hiking and cultural experience.

Nearby, the town of Cetinje, the former royal capital, preserves this legacy through its palace, monastery and former embassies, offering insight into Montenegro’s royal history.

Two significant monasteries include Ostrog Monastery, built into a vertical cliff in the 17th century, and Morača Monastery, dating from the 13th century and known for its preserved medieval frescoes. Together, these sites highlight the historical and spiritual significance of Montenegro.

National Parks, Mountains and Lakes

Montenegro’s landscape extends north into national parks, mountains, ancient forests and lakes, ideal for experiencing time in Montenegro through nature exploration and active adventures.

Durmitor National Park is defined by rugged peaks, high mountain passes such as Sedlo, and the Đurđevića Tara Bridge spanning the Tara canyon. The park includes 18 glacial lakes, locally called “mountain eyes,” including Black Lake and Devil’s Lake, both ideal for walking, exploration and water activities during summer.

Biogradska Gora National Park protects one of Europe’s remaining ancient woodlands, with trees over 500 years old and walking paths around Biogradsko Lake that create a strong sense of respect for this long-preserved natural environment.

Further south, Skadar Lake is ideal for boat excursions and visits to lakeside wineries. These landscapes hold special value for travelers, particularly those drawn to nature and outdoor adventure.
